    Description

Antique Carved Wood Handled Cockade Fan, 10 ½ inches long closed, fan measures 10 inch diameter, unmarked, probably European, probably late 1800’s, needs repair, the pull cord that opens the fan is missing, there is a small break to the handle frame on one side where the wood guard blades rest, there are damages to the polished cotton fan along the folds especially near the guard blades where there is the most tension, the binding along the edges of the fan is unraveled in places especially along the right lower side, there is some spotting on the black cotton, there is some soiling on the white decorative lace, a beautiful and antique fan of very unusual design, there is a carved curve to the handle, the top area where the fan folds into the handle is carved on back and front with leaves and flowers, the fan can be opened manually and will remain open even without the pull cord that would have come out through the hollow handle and through the bead at the bottom, by pulling up gently on the wood guard blades until it reaches the brass rivets then pulling out and down to open the fan, then gently pushing up on the edges of the guard blades, the fan is now ready for use, reverse the operation to close the fan, just lovely and well worth restoring.
